Open enrollment is closed, you can enroll in a Covered California health insurance plan only if you experience a qualifying life event. The next open enrollment period will be in the fall of 2014, (October 15th to 12-07). Remember, you can enroll in Medi-Cal at any time during the year.

Here are some examples of qualifying events that can allow you to obtain health insurance coverage outside the open enrollment period.

A. You get married or enter into a domestic partnership.

B. You have or adopt a child, or you place a child in adoption or in a foster home.

IRS Issues Final Rule on the Individual Mandate

On August 27, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) issued a final rule for the individual mandate provision of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA).

 The limit on out-of-pocket costs, including deductibles and co-payments, was not supposed to exceed $6,350 for an individual and $12,700 for a family. But under a little-noticed ruling, federal officials have granted a one-year grace period to some insurers, allowing them to set higher limits, or no limit at all on some costs, in 2014.

We would like to go over some of the important issues regarding the new Small Business Health Options Program(SHOP) that was recently released by the Covered California marketplace. This comes from a recent press release dated August 1, 2013 from Sacramento, CA.

Great news for San Diego consumers looking to gain access to information and quotes for the new Covered California Marketplace. Just click on the Covered California tab on top which will take you to a page that will allow you to enter in personal information of your family plus your 2012 annual income in order to determine subsidy qualification through the Marketplace.

Important Information Concerning Grandfathered Health Plans in 2014

Under the new upcoming healthcare reform, health insurance policies are considered to be either 'grandfathered' or 'non-grandfathered' plans. It is important to understand the difference since there are advantages to each type of plan/ policy and some health care reform changes may apply to one and not the other.
