Directly from The Scan Foundation:
Who We Are,
The SCAN Foundation is dedicated to creating a society where seniors receive medical treatment and human services that are integrated in the setting most appropriate to their needs, which affords them the greatest likelihood of a healthy, independent life. To make this vision a reality, we work to ensure the availability, affordability, and qualify of long term-term services and supports that keep vulnerable seniors independent in the place they choose to call home.
Why We Started,
This year, the first baby boomers will begin to turn 65 years of age. By 2030, the number of individuals age 65 and older wil nearly double--reaching 20 percent of the US population. the new American senior will have attained higher levels of education, experienced lower levels of poverty, represent increased racial and ethnic diversity, have had fewer children, and enjoy a longer life expectancy than the generations who came before. Yet the reality remains that they will be more susceptible to chronic and possibly debilitating illnesses than earlier generations: up to 70 percent of those turning age 65 will have long-term care needs at some point in their lives-on average for 3 years. Currently, there is no continuum of care to help seniors remain independent as they age. This situation presents serious challenges regarding who will care for them as well as the quality of health and, more important, quality of life they will have during this phase of life.
As the only foundation dedicated to advancing a continuum of quality care for seniors, The SCAN Foundation foresees tremendous opportunities to make a meaningful difference in their lives through changes in state and federal policy, increased public awareness, and implementing innovative programs such as technological innovation and workforce development. We are working to advance this effort through partnership with policy makers, elected officials, consumer advocates, service providers, and thought leaders in research, technology, and education.
What We Fund,
The SCAN Foundation provides funding for public engagement, policy development, and programmatic activities that seek to integrate medical treatment and supportive services for seniors in the setting most appropriate for fostering independence. We support projects in California and nationwide to advance this vision.

The SCAN Foundation was created as an independent charitable organization in April 2008 through a $205 million one-time contribution from the not-for-profit Scan Health Plan.
